When does ovulation occur? Estimate your ovulation date.

Ovulation — the release of an egg — is the key event in your cycle. This calculator estimates when it is likely to happen based on your period start date and cycle length. Confirm with OPKs, BBT or a scan.

Understanding ovulation

Ovulation: the single most important day in your cycle for conception

Ovulation is the moment when a mature egg is released from the ovary. It typically happens once per cycle and marks the peak of fertility. The egg remains viable for only 12–24 hours after release — a narrow window that makes knowing approximately when ovulation occurs valuable for those trying to conceive.

This calculator estimates ovulation based on the most widely used formula: ovulation occurs approximately 14 days before the end of your cycle (i.e., cycle length minus 14). This approach works best for people with regular cycles; irregular cycles require clinical assessment for reliable prediction.

Calendar estimation is a starting point. For greater confidence, combine it with body-based signals: the LH surge detected by ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), rising basal body temperature (BBT), or changes in cervical mucus.

Estimate your ovulation date

The date your most recent period started.

Typical range: 21–35 days. Default is 28.

How to confirm ovulation

Three ways to check beyond a calendar

01

Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs)

Urine-based kits detect the LH surge that precedes ovulation by approximately 24–36 hours. Begin testing a few days before your estimated ovulation date and continue until a positive result appears. A positive OPK indicates ovulation is likely imminent — not that it has occurred.

02

Basal body temperature (BBT)

BBT rises by approximately 0.2–0.5°C after ovulation due to the effect of progesterone. Measure your temperature at the same time each morning before any activity. A sustained rise confirms ovulation has already occurred — useful for identifying a pattern over multiple cycles rather than predicting ovulation in real time.

03

Follicular monitoring ultrasound

The most reliable clinical method. A series of transvaginal ultrasound scans tracks follicle growth and confirms when and whether ovulation occurs. This is standard in ovulation induction cycles and recommended for those with irregular cycles or unexplained infertility.

Frequently asked questions about ovulation

How is the ovulation date calculated?
A calendar-based calculation estimates ovulation by subtracting 14 days from the expected end of the cycle. For a 28-day cycle this places ovulation at day 14 from the start of your period; for a 32-day cycle, around day 18. This is based on the assumption that the luteal phase (the time between ovulation and the next period) is relatively constant at around 14 days. However, the follicular phase (from period to ovulation) varies more between individuals and cycles, which is why this estimate is approximate.
What are signs of ovulation?
Several physical signs can indicate that ovulation is approaching or occurring. A rise and sustained elevation in basal body temperature (BBT) — measured first thing each morning before getting out of bed — typically signals that ovulation has just occurred. A positive result on an ovulation predictor kit (OPK) detects the LH (luteinising hormone) surge that precedes ovulation by 24–36 hours. Changes in cervical mucus — becoming clearer, more abundant, and stretchy (often described as similar to raw egg white) — typically occur in the days approaching ovulation. Mild one-sided pelvic discomfort (mittelschmerz) is experienced by some. These are educational indicators; none replaces clinical assessment.
Does an irregular cycle affect ovulation prediction?
Yes, significantly. Calendar-based predictions assume a consistent cycle length, but in irregular cycles — such as those associated with PCOS, thyroid disorders, hyperprolactinaemia, or significant weight changes — the follicular phase length varies, making the ovulation date unpredictable. In these situations, ovulation predictor kits may still be useful for detecting the LH surge in real time, but a follicular tracking ultrasound ordered by your doctor provides the most reliable information about when (or whether) ovulation is occurring.
Can ovulation be tracked medically?
Yes. Follicular monitoring — a series of transvaginal ultrasound scans performed on specific days of the cycle — allows a clinician to watch the dominant follicle grow and confirm ovulation. This is far more accurate than any calendar or kit-based method. It is commonly used in ovulation induction cycles and for couples who have been trying to conceive without success. Ovulation induction at Aansh pairs medical stimulation with monitoring scans to optimise timing. Dr. Shweta Agarwal can advise whether monitoring is appropriate for your situation.
