Frequently asked questions about fertility diagnostics

What tests are done to diagnose infertility?
A fertility workup typically includes a semen analysis for the male partner and, for the female partner, blood tests (including AMH, FSH, LH, thyroid function, and prolactin), a pelvic ultrasound, and — depending on findings — additional investigations such as an HSG to assess tubal patency or a hysteroscopy to examine the uterine cavity. The specific tests ordered depend on your history and initial findings; not every test is needed in every case.
What is an HSG test?
Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an X-ray procedure that checks whether the fallopian tubes are open (patent) and whether the shape of the uterine cavity appears normal. A small amount of contrast dye is introduced through the cervix; its flow is observed under X-ray. The procedure is usually done as an outpatient and takes about 15–20 minutes. Some women experience mild cramping during and shortly after the test.
What is AMH and why is it tested?
Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) is produced by small follicles in the ovaries and is used as a marker of ovarian reserve — an indication of the quantity of eggs remaining. A low AMH level suggests reduced ovarian reserve, which can affect how the ovaries respond to stimulation. AMH is a useful planning tool but one of several factors considered; a low AMH does not by itself determine whether pregnancy is possible.
How long does fertility testing take?
The timeline depends on which tests are needed and where you are in your cycle. Blood tests and a semen analysis can be done within a few days. An HSG is typically scheduled in the first half of the menstrual cycle (days 7–10). More complex investigations such as laparoscopy are arranged based on clinical need. In most cases, a core diagnostic picture is available within one menstrual cycle of starting the workup.
