Male factor infertility

Male fertility evaluation and treatment — in-house, from analysis to ICSI.

Male factor infertility contributes to approximately half of all infertility cases — yet it is often under-investigated. Aansh Hospital & IVF Center evaluates and treats male fertility in-house at a government-registered Level 2 ART clinic (Reg. No. MH/AC/2024/15441/L2/Chandrapur/132), without referral to an external lab.

A complete fertility evaluation always includes a male-factor assessment. Sperm quality, count, motility, and morphology are assessed on-site using WHO reference criteria. When an abnormality is found, the clinical team identifies the cause — hormonal, structural, or genetic — and plans the most appropriate response. For couples undergoing IVF, the embryology lab handles every stage of sperm processing and ICSI under one roof.

Embryology lab

Sperm handling and ICSI on-site

All sperm processing — including preparation for IUI, ICSI injection, and cryopreservation — is performed in Aansh's on-site embryology lab. The lab is overseen by Aayush Agarwal, Ph.D., Senior Clinical Embryologist, who manages ICSI, embryo culture, and cryopreservation at the Chandrapur centre. No sample is sent to an external facility.

Frequently asked questions about male fertility

What causes male infertility?
Male infertility has many possible causes, including low sperm count (oligospermia), absent sperm in the ejaculate (azoospermia), poor sperm motility, abnormal sperm shape (morphology), hormonal imbalances, varicocele, and genetic factors. A thorough evaluation — beginning with a semen analysis — helps identify the specific cause in each case.
What is a semen analysis?
A semen analysis is the cornerstone test for male fertility evaluation. It measures sperm count, motility (movement), morphology (shape), volume, and other parameters according to WHO reference criteria. The sample is produced on-site and processed in the embryology lab. Results are explained by the clinical team in context of your overall evaluation.
Can male infertility be treated?
Many causes of male infertility can be addressed or worked around. Depending on the diagnosis, options include lifestyle optimisation, hormonal or medical management, surgical sperm retrieval (in cases of azoospermia), or using retrieved or ejaculated sperm in procedures such as ICSI. The right approach depends on the specific finding — which is why evaluation comes first.
Is sperm retrieval painful, and how does it work?
Surgical sperm retrieval procedures such as TESA or micro-TESE are performed under local or short general anaesthesia, so discomfort during the procedure is minimal. There may be mild soreness for a day or two afterwards. Retrieved sperm are assessed in the embryology lab and, if suitable, used for ICSI. The procedure is planned and explained in full before it takes place.
